Digital Play Therapy and Telehealth for Children and Teens

Supporting children and teens through connection, creativity and therapeutic digital spaces

At PolyPlay Therapy Hub, play therapy can be offered not only in person, but also through carefully planned digital and telehealth sessions. Digital play therapy provides children and young people with a safe, creative and engaging way to access therapeutic support from their own home, school or another familiar environment.

For many children and teens, online spaces are already part of how they communicate, connect, explore identity and express themselves. When used therapeutically and intentionally, digital tools can support emotional expression, relationship building, problem solving, confidence and self-understanding.

What is Digital Play Therapy?

Digital play therapy uses online platforms, digital games, creative tools, drawing, storytelling, role play, virtual sandtray activities, shared screen resources and therapeutic conversation to support a child or young person’s emotional and social development.

The focus is not simply on “playing games online.” In digital play therapy, the therapist uses play, creativity and the therapeutic relationship to help the child or young person explore their feelings, experiences, challenges and strengths in a way that feels natural and safe for them.

Just like in face-to-face play therapy, the child or young person is supported through a relationship built on trust, respect, emotional safety and acceptance. The therapist carefully observes themes, communication, choices, patterns of play and emotional responses, and uses these to understand the young person’s inner world.

Telehealth

Telehealth allows children and young people to access therapy through a secure online video session. This can be especially helpful for families who have difficulty travelling to the clinic, live further away, have busy schedules, or need support during school holidays or transition periods.

Telehealth sessions may include creative play, drawing, storytelling, therapeutic games, emotional regulation activities, parent-child connection activities, or more reflective conversation depending on the child’s age, developmental stage and therapeutic goals.

For younger children, telehealth often works best when a parent or caregiver helps set up the space, provides access to a few toys or creative materials, and supports the child to stay in a safe and private area. For older children and teenagers, telehealth can offer a comfortable and less confronting way to engage in therapy.

Digital Play Therapy for Teens

Digital play therapy can be particularly meaningful for teenagers. Many teens do not always want to sit face-to-face and talk directly about their feelings. For some, traditional talk therapy can feel intense, awkward or uncomfortable, especially at the beginning of therapy.

Digital play therapy gives teens another way in.

Through online games, creative digital tools, collaborative problem-solving, metaphor, storytelling, character creation, music, images, and shared interests, teens can express themselves without feeling pressured to “perform” emotionally or answer direct questions before they are ready.

For teens who enjoy gaming, digital worlds can become a rich therapeutic space. Themes such as control, safety, identity, friendship, conflict, risk, responsibility, belonging, frustration, achievement and resilience often naturally emerge through digital play. The therapist can gently use these moments to support emotional insight, self-regulation, flexible thinking and connection.

Telehealth may also feel safer for teenagers because they can join from a familiar environment. This can reduce anxiety and increase their sense of control, especially for young people who are neurodivergent, socially anxious, school-avoidant, emotionally overwhelmed, or reluctant to attend therapy in person.

How Digital Play Therapy Can Help

Digital play therapy and telehealth may support children and teens with emotional regulation, anxiety, low confidence, social challenges, school stress, family changes, friendship difficulties, neurodivergent needs, trauma, grief, anger, withdrawal or difficulties expressing feelings.

For teenagers, it can also support identity development, self-esteem, peer relationships, emotional awareness, problem solving, communication, motivation and a stronger sense of agency.

At PolyPlay Therapy Hub, digital work is always guided by the young person’s developmental needs, interests and therapeutic goals. The aim is not to replace real-life connection, but to use digital spaces as a bridge into meaningful therapeutic relationship and emotional growth.

A Neurodiversity-Affirming and Child-Centred Approach

Our approach is child-centred, neurodiversity-affirming and trauma-informed. This means we do not force children or young people to talk before they are ready. Instead, we meet them where they are, follow their interests, and support them to express themselves in ways that feel safe and authentic.

For some children and teens, this may look like creative storytelling. For others, it may involve Minecraft-style building, drawing, online therapeutic games, emotional regulation activities, or simply having a calm and accepting space to connect with a therapist.

The relationship remains the heart of the work. Digital tools are used to support connection, not replace it.

What Families Need for Telehealth

For telehealth sessions, families will need a stable internet connection, a device with a camera and microphone, and a private space where the child or young person can engage without unnecessary interruptions.

For younger children, it can be helpful to prepare a small selection of toys, paper, pencils, sensory materials, figures, blocks or other preferred play items. For teenagers, it may be more appropriate for them to have headphones, privacy, and access to agreed digital tools or games used within the session.

Parent involvement will depend on the child’s age, needs and therapy goals. Sometimes parents may be involved at the beginning or end of a session, while other times the young person may need a more private therapeutic space.

Is Telehealth Right for My Child or Teen?

Telehealth can be a wonderful option for many children and young people, but it is not always the best fit for everyone. Some children may need the sensory richness and physical containment of an in-person playroom. Others may engage more openly online than they do face-to-face.

During the initial consultation, we can discuss your child’s needs, developmental stage, interests, safety, privacy and goals to decide whether digital play therapy or telehealth may be suitable.

Online Support with Warmth, Safety and Connection

Digital play therapy is not just about using technology. It is about creating a safe therapeutic relationship where children and teens feel seen, heard and understood.

Whether in person or online, our goal is to support young people to build emotional awareness, confidence, regulation, connection and a stronger sense of self.
