Filial Therapy is a psychoeducational model. This family-oriented technique directly involves parents in the therapeutic process by providing parents with training to conduct special playtime sessions with their children, strengthening the parent-child relationship.
Filial Therapy was developed by Drs. Bernard and Louise Guerney. It emphasises the important role parents play as change agents in their children's development and growth and integrates elements from a range of theoretical frameworks, including psychodynamic, humanistic, interpersonal, behavioural, developmental, cognitive, and family systems theories.
Filial Therapy is suitable for children who are between the ages of 3-12, for parents to conduct the special play sessions with each of the children in the family.
