Humanistic Play Therapy, is also known as Child-Centred Play Therapy (CCPT), emphasises the child's inner experience, this approach allows children to direct their own play and work through emotions at their own pace.
CCPT is founded on the belief that every individual inherently possesses a drive for growth and self-direction when provided with the right environment. In CCPT, the therapist's role is to create these optimal conditions, focusing on the child and the therapeutic relationship. The eight guiding principles for CCPT therapists emphasise authenticity, acceptance, sensitivity, respect for the child's abilities and initiative, and the careful setting of limits.
In CCPT, the therapist provides a well-equipped playroom with carefully selected and consistent toys, allowing the child to explore and play freely without direction or interference. While maintaining congruence, empathy, and unconditional positive regard, the therapist actively reflects the child's thoughts and feelings, observes their play behaviours, and appropriately returns responsibilities to the child.
