Learn to Play is a directive approach that is developed by Karen Stagnitti, focusing on teaching children the basic skills of pretend play, such as play script, sequences of play actions, doll/teddy play, object substitution, role play and social interaction, to increase their ability to initiate play spontaneously.
In this model, therapists act as co-facilitators, engaging children based on a standardisd assessment of their play abilities. They emotionally connect with the child by following their lead, capturing joint attention, modelling play actions, and employing variations and repetitions in play activities. Therapists also introduce new characters or challenges to enrich the experiences.
LTP is designed for children aged 2 to 13 years, including those with diagnoses, disabilities, developmental delays, or difficulties in playing.
